Year 5 and 6 water colour : Painting and using a wash so that brush strokes can't be seen before painting over the wash.

Year 3 and 4 Wild art : Collage - creating aesthetically pleasing compositions using natural materials. These were put on display as part of a jubilee festival in our local church.

Design and Technology
Year 5 and 6 experimenting with mechanisms that convert rotary motion to linear motion using a a simple cam. By placing the axle off centre, the cam rotates and raises the object it supports in a straight (linear) line.
Year 3 and 4 experimenting designing a product linked to a theme that requires stitching two pieces of materials and a button.
Year 1 and 2 experimenting with wheels and axles to make a moveable toy after visiting Hollytrees museum in Colchester.
Year 1 and 2 learnt that wider wheels were more stable than thinner wheels.

Children in Classes 3 and 4 studied the symbolism behind different crosses from around the world
Children learn about the significance of Lent to Christians during a series of whole school assemblies. What do these images have in common? Can you see the connection?
Year 5 and 6 studied Leonardo de Vinci's composition referred to as the 'Last Supper' to see if they could spot Christian symbolism. Can you see how the disciples are grouped in threes mirroring the concept of the Trinity. The windows at the back and sides are also grouped in threes. I wonder what the disciples might be discussing?
Year 1 and 2 learning about the Great Fire of London and linking it to science and the properties of materials. I wonder what material would have made a good waterproof jacket for the firemen of London?
Year 3 and 4 learning about Ancient Greece and the legacy this civilisation left behind. The concept of democracy was reinforced in one of our whole school assemblies and the campaigning by Emily Pankhurst that resulted in equal voting rights for men and women in this country.
Year 3 and 4 looked at historical sources to try and get a sense of how Stisted village has changed over time. The children were fascinated by the original school log and the entry on May 2nd 1873 where the headteacher did not speak very highly of the children's arithmetic and notation. Many children were absent because of scarlet fever - perhaps this was like the coronavirus of its time?

Learning to be worldly wise
Cultural Capital is the essential knowledge pupils need to broaden their options, choices and aspirations so that they can lead happy, fulfilling and rewarding lives. This involves introducing them to the best that has been thought and said to help engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement. We refer to this as being worldly wise and have built in numerous opportunities for children to broaden their horizons.
Year 5 and 6 at Mersea on a 4 day residential. This gave our children the opportunity to push themselves beyond what they though they were capable of achieving.
Year 4 continued the outdoor adventurous theme with a residential to Danbury and our Reception Class had a one night stay in the school grounds.
Earlier this Year both Year 1 and Year 2 also took part in an overnight stay in the school grounds as they missed out during lockdown.
This year our children have been working together to develop basic cookery skills. They have also been learning about hygiene and safety and how different foods are stored and what might happen if they are stored incorrectly. The children have also been working on healthy eating and nutrition including what the Eatwell Guide advises.
Children learn about global and nation events including the plight of child refugees from Ukraine.
The children also learnt about climate change and how Greta Thunberg campaigns for change by speaking out.
Children also learn about significant people who have made a difference. Emily Pankhurst campaigned for equal voting rights was a source of inspiration during a whole school assembly.
Art is everywhere. Artists design clothes, decorate houses, invent fashion, design wallpaper patterns, they create special effects in movies, cars, photography, publishing, buildings, computer graphics amongst many other things. Having an understanding of the scope art can provide can open possibilities and aspirations children may not have previously considered as a hobby, interest and maybe one day a future career.
This is we try to teach children to think like an expert in each subject discipline by equipping them with the knowledge and vocabulary they need.
