We have been working really hard in Class with counting on in addition. Making the jump from counting all of the objects to realising they can count on from the bigger number is a big step but most of the children can now do this, if they believe in themselves!
I have included a link to a YouTube clip to help understand the concept.
The attached worksheet encourages the children to count on as they have the larger number written and the objects to help them count on. These sheets can be easily made at home too. These can then be adapted for your child with numbers up to 10 or 100! This would be a great activity to continue in the holidays in preparation for Class 2.
The Early Learning Goal which the children are working on is:
Children count reliably with numbers from 1 to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.
Children will be able to count on when adding a single digit number to a 2 digit number.
