Year 5 notes for English- Letter writing

Hello everyone,

I hope you all had a nice weekend and are staying safe.

Here is the work for the next few days:

Year 6

Subject What to do: Suggested time
Literacy

SPaG Online- Well done on your results last time guys- I was really pleased with your scores. This week we have the 2016 KS2 SATs test for you to have a go at. I think the tests have got harder over the years so I expect to to do really well on this one too. Remember to read the questions carefully and to put the correct punctuation in if the question asks you to write a sentence. Good luck.

KS2 English SATs question book- please attempt pages 14-15 'Comparing'. There are 2 texts. The first is about a boy who was good at running and the second compares living in a city to living in the countryside.

Bitesize- Year 6 Maths. Find the Multiplying fractions lesson (12th May- you may need to scroll down) and the Dividing fractions lesson (13th May). Work your way carefully through these lessons. Remember when you divide a fraction it gets smaller e.g 1/4 divided by 3 is 1/12. Multiplying fractions is just like repeated addition e.g 2/7 x 3 = 6/7 (2/7 + 2/7 + 2/7). When you multiply 2 fractions together you just multiply out the numerators and the denominators e.g 3/4 x 4/5 = 12/20 (which is 3/5 in its simplest form).

Then look back at page 26 Number, Ratio and Algebra book (you did this recently) and check you have understood and answered correctly. Write yourself out some calculations involving multiplying and dividing fractions:

e.g 4/5 x 2/3.    1/6 divided by 3 etc...

Topic

Read through the WW2 timeline cards that I have attached. Most of this information should be familiar to you if you have followed the previous lessons. Discuss the information on these cards with an adult. You may wish to print them out and put them in your book but don't worry if you can't. You could make your own time line of events that includes lots of the detail we have learnt about, based on these cards.

45 mins
Creative

Write an acrostic poem called LOCKDOWN (see below). How has it been for you? What have you missed? What have you enjoyed? Decorate and present creatively.

Lonely, really miss my friends,

Only allowed out to exercise once a day.

Project Read through your project and think of at least 2 or 3 ways you could improve what you have already done. It could be by adding detail, checking spelling, decorating, making borders, numbering pages, adding a contents page, improving the front cover, adding some pictures/print outs from internet. Then carry out these improvements thoughtfully. 45 mins

Imagine you had been evacuated during WW2. Sent to a safer, faraway place- away from your parents. You wouldn't have known the family or person you would be staying with and you'd only be allowed to take a small bag of your belongings. Plan a letter home to your parents after 1 week of staying at you new home.

Think about- the train journey to your new home, what the family are like, what the place is like, what your bedroom is like and how you are feeling, what you are missing, any questions you need to ask your parents.

When you've planned your letter try to write it out organising it into paragraphs.

I've attached some notes to help you.

Continue working  through the maths textbook you were given- carrying on from where you left off last time. Work carefully and thoughtfully and remember to check your answers.

Bitesize Maths Year 5- Look at the fractions lessons dated 14th May and 18th May. Work your way through these. If you are finding these a little easy look at the Year 6 work above- which is also about fractions. If this is a little tricky attempt some of the Year 4 Maths work which will help to build your confidence.
