Thursday 4th June

 Good morning all,

It was great to speak with Year 6 on Tuesday. I couldn't get through to everyone so I hope you are all ok.

Here is the work for the next few days.

Take care everyone.

Mr Williams

Year 6

Subject What to do: Suggested time
Literacy

Spellings- Write out your weekly spellings again (the ones you chose earlier in the week)- note down the ones that are the most challenging and spend some extra time learning these. Then on Friday ask someone to test you on these words.

Punctuation- using speech punctuation (including inverted commas) accurately. Look carefully in a reading book to remind yourself how speech punctuation is used.

Remember:

  1. Inverted commas enclose the spoken words
  2. Capital letter to start speech
  3. New speaker = new line
  4. Punctuation inside closing inverted comma
  5. He said, “What a lovely day.”  (don’t forget the comma after said if this comes before the spoken words)

Task- copy down 3 examples of using speech punctuation from a reading book.

Then attempt some/all of the attached worksheets.

Reading- p20-21 Mixed practice Non-Fiction. KS2 English SATs Question book

Science- Dissolving continued.

When you did your experiments earlier in the week- which substances dissolved? salt? sugar? coffee?

When a substance dissolves in water can you get the original substance back? You are going to test this.

The solid e.g salt/sugar/coffee dissolved into the liquid (water). It dissolved but it didn't disappear. If you boil the new substance you may be able to get the original solid back. When the new substance boils the liquid evaporates into a gas. Eventually the liquid will all evaporate and the original solid will be left behind.

Ask your parents to help you investigate this.

Creative

Design and make a ‘wartime garden’. During WW2 people were encouraged to grow their own fruit and vegetables in their gardens as supplies were short/scarce. Many households also had Anderson Shelters in their gardens. What else might they have had in their gardens at this time?

Be creative and design and make a model of a wartime garden.

*This will be ongoing- so you have all week and next weekend to complete it.

As long as you need!

Project Please continue with any outstanding project work if you haven’t yet finished. 30 mins

Spellings- have a look at the 40 spellings from the last 2 years of KS2 SATs tests. What do you think? Easy or difficult- or a bit of both? Make sure you know what each off these words mean (find out if you don't) and begin to learn some of them. Can you group them according to spelling patterns or endings etc?

Catch up on some of the BBC Bitesize Year 5 Literacy lessons from this week. There is a good variety this week to choose from (do some or all of them).
